Is there more to online games than fun? (Re-post)

Is there more to online games than fun?

What if teachers could harness their creativity and knowledge to engage students in new and exciting ways? What if teachers supported each other in becoming designers of their own games for learning?

Gaming has evolved in the past 20 years. As a young boy in the 90s a Super Nintendo was the most advanced console at the time, but the games would only last for a few months before they stopped working and needed to be cleaned regularly.

Games today have improved a great deal. The PS4 and xbox1 consoles are able to download games onto the console which can be kept for a lifetime, they can also connect straight to the internet where you can play together with gamers all around the world.

The graphics on games today are close to life-like and there is such a large variety of games that can be played. Some genres consist of: shooter games, Role-playing, strategy, sports, Action RPG, Adventure and so many more.
The average age of gamers in Australia is 33years old.

There are Action adventure games such as Assassin’s Greed which has historic events incorporated in to the game, therefore allowing the user to learn actual facts of history while playing the game.

Sports games like NRL and FIFA test the gamers reflexes. Games in this genre also test the user’s speed, timing and skill.

Role-playing games(RPG) like the Uncharted game-series takes the gamer through a story where the user explores their curiosity and sense of adventure.

There are also games such as Minecraft which is a combination of genres. Minecraft is a RPG, Adventure, action, strategy and educational game which allows the user to be adventurous and explore their environment for resources which they will collect to construct tools and buildings.

So as you can see online games are more than just fun. They allow the user to escape reality and go on adventures. They test speed, timing, skill and can also teach the user interesting facts along the way.
