Why is it important to understand the importance and symbolism of images?

Understanding symbolism of images is important because images are everywhere, on the internet, on posters, on bus stands and all over the media, everywhere we look there are images.

Images can bring people together in peace or divide people and could create conflict. Images can be signs of respect or they can be offensive to others, they can be used as love, hate, political statements, or can be a symbol that sparks a war. That is why it is extremely important that we think deeply in what images we would like to use or present to people.

With the growth of the internet images are easily transferred from person to person. It is impossible to keep track of an image and know where that image will end up. It is also very easy for computer hackers to access a persons information and steal private files from ones computer.

Images can portray a message and have meaning. They can also stimulate, motivate and engage people of all ages.

Culture and religion can also contribute to an individual’s understanding of imagery. A cross can have no meaning to an atheist but the same cross to a Christian can be a symbol of faith and have a greater meaning than to a person who is not a believer in Christ.

Images are so important that our first form of communication was manly based on the use of images and drawings. People used drawings to tell stories, leave messages, and leave detailed accounts of how the author lived and what they saw during their lifetime.

Before writing with words many millennia ago, people would use representational drawings to communicate (pictography).
